BBFC and PEGI

BBFC- British Board of Film Classification

  • independent non-governmental body established in 1912
  •  Classifies films released in cinema, DVD
  • The BBFC is a not for profit organisation in order to remain independent they're not funded from outside organisations
  • cinema- BBFC give the movies an age certificate- U, PG, 12 , 15 and 18
  • they can also decide whether it fits into the genre it was given and when it can be shown if at all
  • Video-  1984 Parliament passed the Video Recordings Act, meaning the BBFC had to review videos and DVD to be sold and decide whether they're suitable to be viewed at home.
  • Video games- BBFC originally classified games as well, for example GTA being rated 18. PEGI replaced the BBFC in rating video games in July 30th 2012. 

PEGI- The Pan European Game information

  • created in Europe 2003 and used in 29 countries
  • it rates games by age of who is suitable to play them. The lowest being 3+ and strongest being 18.
  • PEGI replaced the BBFC in 2012 as the UK's main rating system for video games.
  • they help costumers make informed decisions when buying games from both the age ratings and what the game contains
  • publishers make fill out a questionnaire and send game footage to PEGI for the rating
  • PEGI also puts warning son what the games contain on the back of the box
  • Their ratings are a traffic light system- 3+-7 games are marked in green, 12 or 16 games are marked in orange and 18s are red.
