Budgeting Notes: an introduction to film budgeting
What is budgeting and how does it work?- creative tool
- constant communication with director and departments
- must know the budget first
- must read the script first
- list and know all the locations, make up, FSX, props, vehicles, equipment, crew, cast, additional labour, sound, music needed for the film.
- figuring out the prices of each thing the film needs
- doing research into the prices of things yourself
- have a constant idea of the prices by calling people and negotiating
- talking to people helps lowering prices
- flow of money- changing the budgets from each department, e.g. art needs more money so its taken from locations department
- Budget is forgotten about when it comes with the smaller things like editing, sound and colour.
- budget is not just for pre production but for the entire product
- remembering catering for your crew as part of the budget
- compromise and balance- helping each department and compromising things between each one.
- the budget will effect the things you can pull off- having one take for major scenes such as a car flipping over
Crowd funding:
film name: Unsound
what was the kick starter for: $15,000 for the film- attorney fees, professional sound mixing, professional colour correction, travel and lodging, film festival admission fee, etc
how long did they developer the concept for: 3 weeks to develop the concept
how many days do successful campaigns last?: 30 days long as new kick starter campaigns will come out and you'll loose interest
what figure did they decide: $15,000
how did they promote the project: through a pitch of your talking about your idea. Posting on social media, friends, family, co-workers. private messaged friends and family to help up. posted on Face book groups on pages for crowd funding. forums for crowd funding. His film had a message of mental health so he went to mental health groups for support. Link all your previous success to prove that you have skill and drive. You need a lot of followers on social media to make money through crowd funding
what is the pyramid marketing structure: 90% of people that see your campaign are 'lurkers', see it, won't really care. 9% 'commenters' will see your campaign and support you by telling others but not pay. 1% ' heavy contributors' will see and contribute money to the project.
1% creators
might get a credit
might get a role
9% commenter
will repost your project
90% lurkers
they'll read your project
won't help you fund or share the message
Enemy of man:
- Enemy of Man requested $250,000 from kicker starter funding, which is still a considerably larger budget than most low budget films.
- They were able to exceed their request by £5,564, allowing the film to go into production as they g0t $255,564 from backers.
- The money was raised by 2,712 backers, who were most likely fans of the actors in advertised in the Kickstarter video, or tempted by the rewards.
- I believe this Kickstarter was more successful than the previous kick starter attempt we looked at as the director Vincent Regan is an actor so he has connections in the industry and could get people to back him if they're fans through posting on social media, where he can reach a larger audience.
- some of the actors put money toward it
- This money would go toward pre production, scout locations, concept art, production, paying staff, renting equipment, catering, paying for actors, costumes, props, and by the end distribution.
- This Kickstarter was successful as it had big name actors working on the project with large followings on social media and advertised it. There was also the temptation of good rewards for funding. They also made a short movie to promote the film, showing his camera work, the actors and the capabilities he has.
- The movie never came out and no one was refunded. The whole budget was spent in production due to poor planning and failing to plan the budget meaning the movie couldn't be distributed properly.

ReplyDeleteYour summary at the beginning on budgetary needs is fine, although perhaps a little bit too note-like (but you do cover all key info).
However, for the work on the two crowdfunded projects, your answers are too brief. For each questions please answer in a full sentence, with some explanation behind your research. For example, for questions 1-3 on Enemy of Man, consider why the figures may be that way and the challenges they may have gone through to get there. Please answer each question in that style - although where you have answered in full sentences no improvements are required.
Please add a comment below reflecting on my comments and explaining any changes you have made.
Mr P
I have changed the last answers to full sentences.
